Exhibition design for [Let's Meet In Nakazonocho]
Unfold the circumstances
The exhibition design for the "Meet the Artist 2022: Creating Space as a Medium, 'Let's Meet in Nakazono Town'" Outcome Report Exhibition conducted by Yamaguchi Information Arts Center [YCAM] since 2022. This project leverages the spatial and temporal surplus created by the "slow dismantling" of vacant houses in Yamaguchi City to temporarily establish cultural facilities. In the outcome report exhibition, in addition to previously recorded videos and new daily items such as chopsticks and tea bowls created by citizens from recycled materials, the "labor" of the dismantling site, including tasks like removing nails and cutting materials, was intended to continue within YCAM’s exhibition hall as is.
On the exhibition floor, the layout of the house that was the dismantling site was recreated using blue tarps. Additionally, instead of preparing architectural mechanisms to fix fixtures, a performance was held where a person would carry the fixtures and stand them in their designated positions every thirty minutes. The exhibition was designed with the core idea that it is not a static display but dynamically changes through human labor, emphasizing that humans actively compose the space.
Through the momentary appearance and disappearance of a living room that once existed, the aim was to demonstrate that architecture and space continue to live through their interactions with humans.
