Online Venue Space Design for [Tokyo Art Book Fair 2020]

For Tokyo Art Book Fair 2020, SUNAKI designed the online venue for VIRTUAL ART BOOK FAIR (VABF), held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The task was not to imitate the physical fair, but to build an online-specific spatial experience while retaining the fair's sense of presence: the excitement of browsing, the chance encounter with a book, and the communication between makers and readers.

The venue was built from a 3D model of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT), and treated the potato as its central motif. With the Netherlands as the featured country of TABF 2020, we drew inspiration from Vincent van Gogh's The Potato Eaters and translated it into a navigable landscape.

Designing the interface meant balancing two seemingly opposite needs: a smooth path from discovery to purchase (handled through each exhibitor's own system), and the right amount of "texture" that can make a sequence of clicks feel like moving through a place. Each booth was composed of randomly assigned parts (from a set of ten), plus wall and tabletop images, forming a lightweight system that could produce variation. In a digital space where gravity does not apply and objects can float without structural connection, we treated such conditions not as limitations, but as a design material.

東京アートブックフェア2020 VIRTUAL ART BOOK FAIR オンライン会場 空間デザイン

美術館のなかのじゃがいも

新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響によりバーチャル開催となった東京アートブックフェア2020のオンライン版、VIRTUAL ART BOOK FAIR（VABF）のオンライン会場デザインを担当した。フィジカルな空間の模倣ではなく、オンラインならではの空間体験をつくりながら、ブックフェア固有の臨場感（高揚感、偶然の本との出会い、作り手と受け手のコミュニケーション）をどのように実装するかが問われた。

会場は東京都現代美術館（MOT）の3Dモデルをベースに構成し、モチーフとして「じゃがいも」を扱った。特集国がオランダであったことから、ゴッホ《じゃがいもを食べる人々》をインスピレーションに、オンライン会場全体を回遊可能な風景として組み立てている。

クリックと情報探索が生み出す情報的なシークエンスに対して、本の購入に至るまでの十分なスムーズさ（購入は各出展者のシステムで行われる）を確保しつつ、同時に空間体験を紡ぎうる適切な引っかかりや肌理を与える。そのバランスを設計の核として追求した。各出展ブースは、ランダムに割り当てられる10種のパーツと、壁面画像・机面画像で構成され、デジタル空間ならではの「重力がなく、物同士が接続していなくても宙に浮いたまま成立する」条件を造形と構成のルールとして取り込んでいる。
